On Saturday 17th of May, a group of staff and supporters of Respected are taking on the challenge of a 58km trek between Corfe Castle and Weymouth. Taking in the sights of Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, tackling a 1700m elevation, this is indeed an ultra challenge! We are doing this because we believe strongly in empowering young people to make healthy and informed choices in the area of relationships.
In a recent survey by the Youth Endowment Fund, nearly half of young people in a relationship had experienced violent or controlling behaviour from their partner.1 Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is on the rise in young people, with peer on peer abuse and exploitation increasing in children.2 These statistics are extremely shocking, and are spurring us on in our challenge.
Respected is already doing fantastic work in secondary schools, offering high quality, holistic relationships and sex education. They cover topics such as internet pornography, consent, healthy relationships and emotional wellbeing. They are currently undertaking ‘Project Enrich and Enhance’ which consists of developing and re-filming their entire programme. They are enriching the resources with new topics, such as positive masculinity and positive role models. This will counter the impact of online influencers who are spreading misogynistic and sexist attitudes, which are fuelling the worrying statistics above. All of the funds raised will go towards ‘Project Enrich and Enhance’. Now more than ever before, young people need to be informed and empowered in the area of relationships. We would love you to support us by giving what you can!
