Hello everyone!
On 7th April 2024, I will be running the Paris Marathon to raise funds for the Helen Loewenstein Memorial Trust (HLMT). The trust was set up in memory of Helen Loewenstein, a remarkable midwife who touched the lives of so many, both in the UK and Liberia.
HLMT provides funding for student midwives in Liberia to train and become qualified midwives.
Liberia has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, 90 times higher than the UK. Statistics for neonatal mortality are equally shocking, 11 times higher than the UK in 2019. Liberia needs 4000 midwives, it currently has around 200.
In 2023-24, HLMT supported ten midwifery students at the Esther Bacon School of Nursing and Midwifery, Zorzor, Liberia. The first 2 midwives supported by HLMT will graduate on 7th June this year! The grants ensure that the best possible students become qualified midwives, rather than only those whose financial circumstances enable them to study. In the coming years, HLMT hopes to increase the number of scholarships offered to student midwives in Liberia.
My target of £1000 will provide a year's training for one student midwife. In Liberia, one midwife delivers 155 babies a year. A midwife working for 20 years will directly benefit over 3,100 mothers plus 3,100 babies and their families.
Please donate all you can!
Thank you for your generosity and support.
