In the summer of 2023, we lost a much loved, respected and truly inspirational member of our fire service family whilst taking on a mammoth challenge for the benefit of others.
Iain Hughes lost his life when he got into difficulty during an official attempt to swim the English Channel. He was doing this to raise money for three charities, The Firefighters Charity, The British Heart Foundation and the Midland Air Ambulance Charity
Iain was a member of West Midlands Fire Services Technical Rescue Unit where one of the roles is all aspects of water rescue and flood response. He was also an extremely dedicated swimmer both in open water and indoors. He spent countless hours training in the pool at David Lloyds Leisure Centre in Brierley Hill where he encouraged many others to get into swimming.
In his memory, we are hoping to inspire volunteers to take up swimming and raise money for his adopted charities. On the 7th and 8th March 2024, in conjunction with David Lloyds Leisure Centre, we will be running a memorial 36 hour swim relay. 48 volunteers will be continually swimming in relay for 45 minutes each and we've set a collective total of 50 miles overall. To achieve this we are hoping for each swimmer to cover just over a mile in their time slot!
Please help support us in this challenge. All money raised will go directly to Iain's 3 chosen charities.
Thank you.
