During August and September 2022, Rubi, my 13-month-old Black Labrador and I will be walking 275 long miles from Welcombe to Cremyll, following the Cornish Coastal Path to raise money for both Bowel Cancer UK and The Fire Fighters Charity.
The reason for undertaking this challenge is in recognition of four wonderful people, all who have been affected by bowel cancer. Their journeys have inspired me to undertake this 22-day challenge to raise valuable funds for the two charities that have helped us all through the difficult journey that is fuelled by this horrible disease:
Kerry Bunt: retired firefighter, ex-colleague and valued friend who sadly lost his battle with bowel cancer in January 2018.
Dave Jennings, aka. Taxi Dave: next door neighbour, all round top bloke and much-loved friend, who also sadly lost his battle in December 2021.
Angie Bradley: good friend and ex-logistics colleague who I met on the 2021 Lands’ End to John O’Groats charity cycle ride, who continues to fight this debilitating illness.
Mike Novell: serving Control Room Operator for Thames Valley Fire Control Services, On-call firefighter for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, ex-colleague and much-loved friend who has recently undertaken his second bout of surgery and against all the odds has now returned to full operational duties.
I think most of you will know about my journey with bowel cancer. We and our families have all lived with the effects that this illness creates and without the help of these two wonderful charities would have found our journeys much harder.
Bowel cancer is the second biggest killing cancer in the UK and with your help we can work towards a world free from this disease. Bowel Cancer UK and The Fire Fighters Charity have helped us to understand, live with and overcome the tortuous effects that go hand in hand with this horrible disease.
