Cerebral Palsy affects 130,000 adults in the UK. It presents in childhood, and at that stage, is rightly given coordinated care. Then at 18, you are no longer under paediatric services, and the support structure disappears. Cerebral Palsy is a lifelong condition, yet the way healthcare is provided to adults with CP is as if the condition has miraculously disappeared.

I started to realise how little support was readily available for adults with Cerebral Palsy when in my mid 30’s I became pregnant with my daughter. Up until this point I wrongly assumed the support was there but that I just hadn’t needed it yet. I’d been having regular botox treatment since I was 18 so knew I was in ‘the system’ as such so thought my Cerebral Palsy and the impact of it on my pregnancy would be taken into consideration. However, I found that during maternity appointments my Cerebral Palsy was never mentioned unless I raised it. In fact, I was referred to consultant care due to me having IVF treatment to become pregnant rather than Cerebral Palsy.
