In Memory of Rick
We’re taking part in this year's Extra Mile Challenge. Andy, Charles, David, Graham and John are cycling 500 miles across central France, raising funds for Brain Tumour Research.
In August 2023 following a series of 'vacant seizures' I was diagnosed with a Meningioma Brain Tumour the size of a Walnut that was putting pressure on my brain causing the seizures.
Friends, family and colleagues rallied around to support our family in every way imaginable and we are forever grateful for their help and support during what was an incredibly difficult time. In October 2023 the tumour was pretty much fully removed. Six weeks after surgery, I had a 'grand mal' seizure and broke my back. I am now nearly a year on from surgery and although there is a 50:50 chance the tumour may re-appear, my last two scans have suggested that my condition remains stable so no further treatment is required just yet.
In a quest to find out more about my predicament, I was directed to Brain Tumour Research, a local charity based in Milton Keynes and was shocked to learn that:
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.
Brain Tumour Research is determined to change this.
They are the only national charity in the UK focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours through campaigning to increase the national investment in brain tumour research to £35 million per year, while fundraising to create a network of seven sustainable Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence across the UK.
Their stories and advice helped me massively through some very dark times and it feels right that this year our Extra Mile team is raising funds for this fantastic charity that helps and guides so many.
As a team we have selected a £3k target.
Thank you for your continued kindness and support through what has been a very difficult time.
Andy and the team.
