The morning will consist of two seminars led by Lizzie Darbyshire, who developed her interest in Manet when she was at the Courtauld Institute of Art. After coffee on arrival, the first seminar will look at the early years of Manet’s career when he struggled to break free from the straightjacket of traditional classical French art. After a break for coffee and home-made biscuits, the second seminar will consider Manet’s links with the younger Impressionists to whom he had become a mentor. His famous painting, A Bar at the Folie-Bergère, will be considered in some detail.
