About

Support us to reroof Holy Rood, Shillingstone, our beautiful Grade1 listed village church much of which is 900 years old.  Click the video link arrow to see a Youtube video of the church.

A recent roof survey showed several sections of the roof in urgent need of repair whilst the whole roof is in poor condition. After the survey was completed, a section of the north aisle roof  collapsed in Nov 22. It was made safe and protected with temporary sheeting. We worked with our architect to urgently reroof this part of the church, completing it in Nov 23.  We need to continue without delay to reroof the chancel which has already started to leak.  The chancel roof covers an exceptionally beautiful and rare ceiling of blue with gold stars which we need to secure from water damage.  We are asking you to 'Sponsor a Tile' for the chancel roof - every £10 donation will pay for the work of removing, cleaning and replacing an existing tile on new battens and bat-safe membrane or for buying a reclaimed tile to replace one that is damaged.  Our target is to have 1600 tiles sponsored at £10 each.

Our aim it so put the whole roof in good order.  This will be a series of vital projects to save our lovely medieval church.

Updates

Great news. We now have the official permission we need for the overroof and to reroof the Chancel.  Please help if you can and we can get it done from the end of this summer.

We are now working on an application for permission to protect the Chancel Roof from water ingress and then reroof it, which we hope to do during 2024. We need to protect and save that exquisite blue and gold ceiling.

The North Aisle roof is complete! Most of the original Bridgewater tiles were still in great condition and were reused along with matching tiles from reclamation.  Fortunately all the trusses were found to sound and did not need to be replaced.  The addition of counter-battens and bat-safe membrane over counter-battens has improved the roof for both bats and people.  All the damage inside cause by water has been repaired.  The roofers worked in very adverse conditions as this autumn was so very, very wet and we do thank them for their skill and care.

Next step: the Chancel roof.

The damaged roof has now been covered with quality tarpaulin well-fixed.  The loose tiles have been removed and conserved.  We are grateful to our architect at Crickmay Stark of Dorchester and to Simon Spiller Building and Roofing for their speedy response.  We have a plan of fundraising, grant applications and contributions that should enable us to reroof the damaged North Aisle later this year.  We are having a bat survey which will determine when work can be done- apparently at least 4 types of bat roost in the church!

The damaged roof has been protected with tarpaulin and the area round it cordoned off.  Loose tiles will be removed and made safe shortly.
