About

Please use this page to donate to North Devon Bat Care.

My name is Samantha Pickering and I run a small bat care unit, from home in Bishops Tawton, North Devon, where I work to rehabilitate and care for sick, injured and orphaned bats. The work I do is voluntary but could only be started after undergoing a lot of training and with support from other bat carers across the UK. Donations from people in my area and the support of my family have also been essential. I have loved bats since I was a child so to be able to give something back to help bats in this way is a dream come true.

North Devon Bat Care is a member of One Voice for Animals UK who are bringing together hundreds of small animal charities, non-profits and their supporters who have all been impacted by Covid-19 and are needing additional fundraising support to survive.

Supporting

North Devon Bat Care

North Devon Bat Care started out as a small rescue inside one room of my home in North Devon in 2012. As more bats needed help the rescue has expanded and now has a purpose-built flight pen and care shed and is the largest specialist bat rescue in the South West of England caring for around 200 bats a year and growing.

With every bat rescued, rehabilitated and released back to the wild (the main aim of the rescue) another person or family gets chance to learn more about the wonderful world of bats. In time I hope to have a larger bat care and education centre which will give more people the chance to get to experience these amazing nocturnal superstars up close and actively participate in activities and training to help protect these mammals in the future.

North Devon Bat Care is self-funded which surprises people as there is the mistaken thought that because bats have full legal protection in the UK, then their care costs would be covered by government or large organisation support. Sadly this is not the case so the costs of their rescue, rehabilitation, release and even roost restoration and creation costs are all covered by myself and from kind donations made by other bat enthusiasts.

North Devon Bat Care could not operate without the support of those amazing individuals that find the bats in the first instance and kindly call for help, the small number of volunteer drivers who help (where possible) in bringing bats into care and releasing them (if the finder is unable to help do that) and the wonderful people that chose to help support this work.
