Edinburgh Direct Aid International (EDAI) is helping victims of the earthquake which hit North West Syria and South East Turkey on 6th February.
Our contacts, Louay Ramadan in North West Syria and Obidaa in South East Turkey, were both refugees in the refugee camp in Arsal, Lebanon, supported by Edinburgh Direct Aid. Louay heads up a small team based in Samarda (adjacent to Idlib Province in the Turkish controlled part of Northern Syria) and has been active in distributing clothing, food, water and baby supplies to the worst hit areas. Obidaa has been similarly active in Turkey.
Having analysed the worst problems and taken soundings from local people, both Louay and Obidaa have come up with a proposal to provide tents and facilities such as sanitation and water to make small camps to shelter those whose homes have been destroyed by the earthquakes. Both have identified sites, gained permission from the local authorities, rented land and sourced tents and the other supplies needed for setting up the camps. These projects have been costed and approved by EDA, and we are now looking to fund the two camps to the tune of $11,000 each. These families have been staying with friends and relatives in cramped conditions, and these are the families which are less likely to have been identified by the larger aid agencies as needing help, though their needs are no less pressing.
